Technical Seminar Onboard Carbon Capture – 11 September 2025

Technical Seminar Onboard Carbon Capture – 11 September 2025

12 September 2025

The Technical Seminar on Onboard Carbon Capture and Storage (OCCS), organized by The Future Fuels and Technology Team, was held at IMO Headquarters on 11 September 2025 to share technical knowledge between stakeholders on the current state of OCCS technologies. The hybrid event was attended by around 400 participants.

The diverse group of speakers at this event shared their perspectives on various aspects of OCCS technologies including practical experiences from existing onboard projects, development of the OCCS value chain, alternative carbon capture technologies and the role of OCCS within the broader context of the shipping industry.

The presentation slides from the seminar are available below:

  1. IMO’s ongoing work on onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) systems – IMO Secretariat
  2. Developing solutions for OCCS: insights from real-ship projects in safety, operation, and regulation – Mr. Joseph Ohg (PANASIA, Republic of Korea) and Mr. Joonghun Kim (Korean Register, Republic of Korea)
  3. Experience with the use of OCCS onboard Clipper Eris – Mr. Sigurd Jennsen (Wärtsilä) and  Mr. Tor Øyvind Ask (Solvang ASA, Norway)
  4. Unlocking the carbon value chain: operationalising offloading, transport and offtake of onboard captured CO2 – Prof. Lynn Loo (GCMD)
  5. An alternative approach to onboard carbon capture: turning CO2 into limestone –  Ms. Alisha Fredriksson (Seabound Ltd.)
  6. Onboard carbon capture – key considerations and challenges – Mr. Hiromasa Kano  (Mitsubishi Shipbuilding)
  7. Onboard carbon capture:  applications and perspectives – Mr. Xiangqian Fang (China Classification Society)
  8. The potential role of onboard carbon capture in decarbonization of shipping – Ms. Chara Georgopoulou (DNV)
  9. Onshore-to-onboard decarbonization: targeting emissions reductions in the conventional maritime system – Dr. Hassan El-Houjeiri (KAPSARC, Saudi Arabia)
  10. Onboard carbon capture implementation: lessons learned from the EverLoNG demonstrations – Mr. Jetro Dam (Heerema) and Ms Juliana Monteiro (TNO) (Netherlands)
