Who are we?
The Future Fuels and Technology Project (FFT Project) is a partnership project between the Government of the Republic of Korea and IMO, established to support IMO’s policy discussions to advance the implementation of the 2023 IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships by promoting knowledge exchange and facilitating access to the latest information on low- and zero-carbon emissions fuels and technologies.
What do we do?
To achieve its goals the project has three main workstreams:
Information portal
Facilitating access to the latest information to promote the uptake of zero and near-zero marine fuels and technologies through the Future Fuels and Technology website.
Technical studies
The Project undertakes technical studies and research to support IMO policy discussions on reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping.
Technical Seminars
Hosting seminars and workshops to facilitate exchange of knowledge and share experiences amongst stakeholders to increase awareness on the latest developments on low- and zero-carbon marine fuels and technologies.
Other IMO initiatives supporting the reduction of GHG emissions from ships
Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme (ITCP)
ITCP supports Governments in the just and equitable decarbonization of shipping, through assistance with development of national regulations and legislation through to capacity building for implementation and enforcement of MARPOL Annex VI. Support for maritime decarbonization is provided across a range of scales, from institutional and Government-level planning, through to facilitating knowledge exchange and technology transfer at the regional level, as well as facilitating access to sustainable finance, with a focus on supporting developing countries, SIDS and LDCs in the uptake of low- and zero-carbon solutions.
ITCP achieves these objectives through a range of activities, including sub-regional and regional workshops, as well as provision of technical support for drafting of national legislation and development of National Action Plans to address GHG emissions from ships.
You can read more about the work of ITCP on the IMO website.
IMO Multi-donor Trust Funds
- The IMO’s Multi-donor GHG Trust Fund is a voluntary multi-donor trust established to provide a dedicated source of financial support for technical cooperation and capacity-building activities to support the implementation of the IMO GHG Strategy. The resources of the Trust Fund include voluntary contributions from IMO Member States, UN Agencies, international organizations, and other entities who have expressed support for the Initial IMO Strategy. Read more here.
- The Voluntary Multi-donor Trust Fund (VMDTF) has been established to provide financial assistance to representatives of SIDS and LDCs who are IMO Member States attending MEPC meetings, and other meetings related to GHG matters. The fund will cover the travel cost of one delegate from each eligible Member State to attend MEPC and ISWG-GHG sessions. Read more here.
Partnerships and projects
IMO has established partnerships with diverse external partners to support the reduction of GHG emissions from ships in developing countries, particularly least developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing states (SIDS), through the implementation of long-term projects and initiatives.
