Regional Workshop on the consistent implementation of IMO 2020 and the 0.10% sulphur limit under MARPOL Annex VI in the Mediterranean Sea Emission Control Area for Sulphur Oxides and Particulate Matter (Med SOx ECA)

The objectives of the workshop organised by the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC), in cooperation with IMO, are to raise awareness about MARPOL and related guidelines, notably the consistent implementation of IMO 2020 under MARPOL Annex VI and the 0.10% sulphur limit in the Mediterranean Sea Emission Control Area for Sulphur Oxides and Particular Matter (Med SOx ECA), to strengthen the capacity of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention on the effective implementation and enforcement of MARPOL Annex VI, and to assist Mediterranean coastal States to ratify MARPOL Annex VI.

In this regard, the workshop will aim at exchanging best practices, including lessons learned from other emission control areas (ECAs) that have been established by IMO (e.g., the Baltic Sea area; the North Sea area), as well as reviewing a draft Guidance Document on the consistent implementation of the 0.10% sulphur limit under MARPOL Annex VI in the Med SOx ECA, prepared by REMPEC.

The Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention are: Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Libya, Malta, Monaco, Morocco, Montenegro, Slovenia, Spain, the Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia, and Türkiye, as well as the European Union.
